Replacing Older Tactical Uniforms and the Universal Camouflage Pattern

The latest camouflage pattern, NFL Nike Pro Combat Uniforms MultiCam, has replaced the older Universal Camouflage Pattern over the past few years. Units not using MultiCam for their uniforms will have the older pattern replaced with the new. This isn\'t the only example of change for tactical uniforms from the past decade, however. In 2005, the older Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) and Desert Camouflage Uniform (DCU) were replaced with the Army Combat Uniform (ACU), which is in use currently.

ACU, when added in 2005, used the older Universal NFL Nike Pro Combat Uniforms Camo pattern. Units across the world have been replacing their older ACUs with the newer MultiCam version over the past five years. Sturdier material and hook and loop fasteners are the primary advantages of ACU. The hook and loop fasteners are added to pockets and are used for attachments. The fabric, meanwhile, uses Near Infrared Signature Management Technology to reduce glare. As all tactical uniforms need to integrate with the latest form of body armor, ACU fits in with the Improved Outer Tactical Vest.

The MultiCam pattern was developed later and is being implemented gradually. All units by the end of 2010, however, need ACUs with MultiCam. The pattern was developed by Crye Associates with the U.S. Army Soldier System Center and blends into nearly all seasons, elevations, and lights. With an overall green and tan appearance, the material reflects the surrounding environment and disguises the wearer through this blending effect.

The green and tan combination uses a larger palette of colors to trick the human eyes\' perception of color. The base for the material is a brown to light tan gradient, with lime green added in between. The lime green, more specifically, consists of a yellow-green gradient with darker brown and pink splotches mixed in. The combination of colors varies across the
